Gary Swift 7th DanJodan Shuto Uke in Ma-hanmi-no-neko-ashi-dachi

The correct performance of Jodan Shuto should comprise of good foot position close to the body (not wide), good weight distribution, blocking arm at 90° with elbow‘slightly’ lower to the shoulder. The hikite arm should cover the solar-plexus with the shoulder relaxed allowing the elbow to drop into a natural position (this allows the arm to direct upwards as opposed to horizontal).
Blocking arm should turn only enough to allow deflection, and not ‘over’ turn to risk compromising the elbow position.
Mahanmi-no-neko-ashi-dachi is common in most Pinan Kata and Ku-Shanku. Additionally, it carries through to many of the more advanced Kata.
Correct foot position should be approximately 135°.
