Jim Taylor 4th Dan Tashi - Ockley Karate Club
Welcome to Ockley Karate Club
Jim Taylor has been practicing Karate for over 14 years. Below he describes background and history in his own words.
"My name is Jim Taylor. I am a 4th Dan black belt. I have been practicing karate for over 14 years, I didn't start until I was 37, so you don't have to be young to start training!
Karate helps to keep me fit and flexible. The training helps with balance and coordination in everyday life as well as self defence.
Our aim at Ockley Karate Club is to teach Wado Ryu Karate. The name Wado means "Way of peace or harmony."
This style of karate was founded by Hironori Ohtsuka 10th Mejin.
Wado Ryu concentrates on speed and evasion using the principles of avoiding, escaping, entering and flowing.
Whilst teaching this traditional Japanese self defence we hope that the students learn the values of self discipline, self confidence, self respect and respect for others.
Karate training requires physical fitness and flexibility, which we also aim to develop as part of our training. Initial fitness is not normally a concern as our fitness naturally improves as part of our training. However, medical conditions should be checked with your doctor prior to any physical exercise particularly something as vigorous as martial arts.
As our founder Hironori Ohtsuka started training at 6 years old and was still teaching and training regularly when he died aged 89 there is no reason to consider age a barrier to karate training."
