A New Sensei?
Opening up a new British Wadokai Karate Club can be both exciting and rewarding. However, things can become a bit of a minefield if they are not handled correctly to begin with; you could also get yourself into legal problems and administrative trouble even before you have taken the first step inside your own Dojo.
As far as the insurance goes, the British Wadokai Licence covers for Person to Person & Public Liability, and your Club Liability is also included under British Wadokai, as long as all the participants are licensed; after initial induction to the club (please contact us for your copy of certificate of insurance).
The first step is Instructor Insurance and (if you are teaching under 18's) a CRB/DBS (or equivalent) certificate.
The Instructor Insurance you will need to apply for you can obtain direct from TL Risk Solutions (you also have an 'option' of adding 'Accident Insurance’, if you wished, but this will cost an extra £65 per year). This can all be done 'on-line' or by application form (application forms can also be obtained from the British Wadokai Website/s). Link to the TL Risk Solutions’ website for information and/or on-line application: TL Risk Solutions.
Certain premises (some private schools, for example) can insist on higher, but normally the £2m Liability cover is enough for Instructor Liability for a normal town/village amateur club (village hall, etc.). Assistant Instructors will also need to be insured; especially if they are intending to take classes if the ‘leading instructor’ is absent at any time. Club 'assistants' do not need to have separate insurance.
CRB's can be obtained from our CRB Officer, Mike Ilderton 6th Dan.
1st Aid Certification can obviously be done at any one of your local facilities, such as the Red Cross or Local Council, etc. Some Local Councils even offer free 1st Aid Courses, so searching on the internet helps to find these things out. In addition to this British Wadokai and the British Wado Federation jointly holds 1st Aid Courses regularly in the South of England. However, if you want to run one of your own, please contact: Impact 1st Aid
Child Protection. This is also very important and can be another minefield, if not handled correctly, and which needs to be dealt with in clarity and full understanding, and also with an understanding of following the British Wadokai Child Protection Policy; which is very much essential.
Regular Child Protection Awareness Courses are available to make sense out of some of the complications, and also having access to our Child Protection Policy/ies is certainly emphasised and encouraged for all newcomers to be aware of; as well as established instructors, due to the regular changes in regulations, etc.
Regular Instructor (H&S) Courses. British Wadokai also holds regular Instructor & Examiners' Courses, which include important elements of Health & Safety, open to all members of 14 years & above.
Don't take any chances, become a 'responsible' Sensei.
